Breaking Gender Stereotypes: An Inquiry into Dressing as a Pedagogical Strategy for Promoting Equality and Emotional Well-being

Supported by the Teaching Practice Research Program, this initiative aims to transform self-defined grooming and styling into a vital medium for demonstrating equality and promoting emotional well-being. Grooming is both a process and an outcome, and the resulting transformations initiate a new process: the construction of experiential knowledge in self-exploration and cognition. Through online sharing, we hope to serve as a catalyst, encouraging more people to discard superficial stereotypes and confront the fact that one's external appearance is also a reflection of one's inner self, thereby discussing the positive dimensions of styling for emotional healing. [1]
This study explores how clothing and styling can serve as crucial mediums for gender equality education and analyzes their contributions to students' emotional health. In contemporary society, clothing is often viewed as an extension of gender stereotypes, restricting diverse gender expressions and subjecting those who dress non-conformably to discrimination and insecurity in public spaces. By designing a ten-week course that combines action research, qualitative analysis, and quantitative surveys, this study comprehensively examines the impact of styling activities in educational settings.
The anticipated outcome is the establishment of a gender equality teaching model centered on styling. This will demonstrate that a safe styling environment can enhance students' emotional health, and will provide feasible strategies for educational practitioners to promote a gender-friendly learning atmosphere. This research not only provides innovative methods in education but also strengthens students' sense of security and emotional support in terms of mental health, ultimately fostering greater societal understanding and respect for diverse gender expressions.
