Dialogue on Gender Equality in Styling: Creating a Gender-Friendly Campus Ministry of Education's "Research Project on the Development and Promotion Strategies of Gender Equality Education Curriculum."

Experiencing the Feelings of Every "Different" Individual Through Action: Embracing Beautiful Souls with Love, Respect, and Inclusion

Gender equality has been incorporated into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), advocating for respect and inclusion of diverse gender identities. Through the Ministry of Education's "Research Project on the Development and Promotion Strategies of Gender Equality Education Curriculum," National Taiwan University of Science and Technology has launched an innovative elective course, "Gender Equality and Styling." This course encourages students to reflect on the rigid stereotypes formed by traditional gender binary perspectives, which have led to many instances of bullying and discrimination.

Students are guided to practice styling equality with their own hands, courageously breaking free from existing unfair constraints. Through cross-gender dressing experiences on campus, they encounter various reactions—both friendly and unfriendly—allowing them to truly feel the fear, suppression, warmth, and acceptance that many individuals face. This fosters empathy and extends the impact of gender equality education beyond the classroom, encouraging broader dialogues and fulfilling the university’s social responsibility.

Professor Shih Mei-Fang, the course instructor, emphasizes that many bullies who target others based on gender expression are themselves victims of rigid societal gender stereotypes. Without inclusive attitudes and proactive education on gender and styling equality, ignorance can unintentionally become a weapon of harm. The course aims to promote equality, encouraging individuals to confidently express their true selves without fear of suppression due to gender identity.

At the end of the course, students engage in a practical action project, breaking traditional norms by freely styling themselves and stepping into public spaces. On this day, teachers and students become both educators and learners. The event features Li Meng-Ying, a professional drag queen and representative from the Garden of Hope Foundation, who provides expert styling advice based on real-world experience. After the campus walk, participants share their reflections on gender equality in practice.

Students responded positively to this "beautiful campus celebration," expressing thoughts such as:

  • "Fearlessly expressing myself without worrying about others' opinions."

  • "I believe we shouldn't overly care about others' gazes. Confidence in our appearance is key, and knowing that many people support us makes us feel less alone. This builds self-assurance and enjoyment in personal styling."

  • "I think this is an important step toward gender and styling equality. Integrating these ideas into the campus environment allows for deeper reflection and understanding."

By embedding diverse perspectives and values into experiential learning, the university fosters deeper thought and practice, ultimately contributing to societal progress.
